TITLE :JAPANESE AUTO MAKER BRIEF NEWS
●Toyota records 34% jump in third-quarter net profit
Toyota Motor Corp. said Feb 7,Tuesday its group net profit for the
fiscal third quarter jumped 34.1 percent from the previous year to
a record 397.5 billion yen thanks to thriving overseas sales and
the yen's depreciation against the dollar.
Income before taxes in the three-month period surged 43.1 percent
year-on-year to an all-time high of 640 billion yen due to a gain
from valuation of shares.
During the October-December period, operating profit rose 14 percent
to 482 billion yen while sales grew 14.8 percent to 5.33 trillion yen
-- both record highs.
The world's second-biggest automaker said the yen's weakness vis-a-vis
other currencies helped boost its operating profit by 130 billion yen
while the firm cut 30 billion yen in operational costs. This more than
offset the rise in capacity-expansion costs tied to rising global
demand.
The increase in research and development expenses, expenses related
to capital investment and personnel costs added up to 87.7 billion
yen for the quarter.
"We expect sales and profits for the full year to March to show
a year-on-year increase," Managing Director Takeshi Suzuki told a
news conference in Tokyo, citing steady growth in demand, especially
in overseas markets.
Another factor contributing to higher profits was the 143 billion yen
gain accrued from valuation of the UFJ Holdings Inc. shares it held
before the October merger of UFJ Holdings and Mitsubishi Tokyo
Financial Group Inc. Toyota received common shares of Mitsubishi
UFJ Financial Group Inc. as a result of the merger.
The automaker, following accounting principles generally accepted in
the United States, logged the gain in income before taxes as a
difference between the acquisition price of the shares prior to the
merger and afterward.
Toyota did not disclose its full-year earning projections.
It traditionally refrains from giving specific figures on
a consolidated basis, citing uncertainties in its business environment.
The Toyoda, Aichi Prefecture-based automaker's net profit reached a
record 1.17 trillion yen in fiscal 2004, surpassing the 1.00 trillion
yen mark for the second consecutive year. It was the first firm to
cross that threshold in fiscal 2003.
In terms of sales volume, Toyota sold 1.98 million vehicles globally
during the reporting period, up 7.6 percent from the previous year.
The figure includes sales by subsidiaries Daihatsu Motor Co.
and Hino Motors Ltd.
★Nissan invests 11 billion yen for paint
Nissan Motor Co. said Monday Feb.6 it will invest 11 billion yen
by May 2007 in a new paint application system at its plant in Karita,
Fukuoka Prefecture, to boost the efficiency of its auto body painting.
The automaker called the system "the first in the world to eliminate
paint hoses attached to the arms of the finish line coating robots."
Instead of hoses, the system fills the tanks of paint guns directly,
which allows the use of smaller robots capable of more detailed paint
work, which usually must be done manually.
The new coating system is also more environmentally friendly because
it uses water-based paints, helping reduce by 42 percent the use of
environmentally harmful organic compounds, the automaker said.

したならばそれだけでも達成感がない。もし、それでもできないと、
さらに目標を下げ、悪循環に陥いってしまう。
そこで、できなくとも１１０〜１２０％ぐらいの目標を設定し
何度も取り組んでいくと、やがて１００％の成功が可能になるはず。
その積み重ねが時として１５０％、２００％へと飛躍を遂げることもある
だろう。目標の設定を「届きそうな所」で設定するのが人情だが、
あえて「高め」にしたいものだ。
日本では 引っ込みがちになる極寒の2月。
